MORE INFO

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could understand your golf game a bit? Not just improve the game, but understand what you need to do and why you need to do it?  To make it considerably more spectacular, you’d take these lessons in the Florida sunshine. Oh, and let’s throw in a PGA tournament – getting an opportunity to watch the world’s best golfers go head to head.

Waggle Travel, The Traveling Golfer and trickshot wizard/golf instructor Todd Keirstead (Golf With Attitude) have teamed up to put together a terrific package of golf instruction March 22-26 at Orlando’s a
ward-winning Orange County National.  Orange County National was recently ranked second in all of the U.S. and tops in Florida in the Golf World Readers Choice Awards.  Coincidentally enough, the Arnold Palmer Bay Hill tournament is in town that same weekend and you’ll have tickets to see just how it is done.

“You’ll be working on your game and watching the world’s elite,” says Keirstead, who will provide 16 hours of instruction.

“We were trying to pick a warm climate to do this and (Waggle Travel’s) Mike (Kilgore) has a relationship with Orange County National.”

“Orange County has a great teaching range and facility,” says Traveling Golfer owner and resident traveling golfer Claudio DeMarchi. “It’s also where the PGA Show holds all its club testing and demo areas.”

There will be small player/teacher groups with up to eight people working with Keirstead. If more golfers enlist, more teachers will be added. It’s $1,125 per person and includes breakfast, lunch, day passes to the PGA event and accommodation at Orange County National.

“We want to expand on the golf school program. This is something we could be providing 12 months of the year, whether it’s in Canada in the summer or warmer destinations the rest of the year. We could really take the program anywhere. We want to make this an overall experience.”

Orange County National is an exceptional layout – with two beautiful 18-hole courses – Panther Lake and Crooked Cat, along with a nine-hole short course called Tooth, which is free for lodge guests and great for putting into practice what you learn.

Keirstead, with an extensive background, including learning at the Jim McLean Golf Academy at Doral, has a unique and refreshing way of instruction. To say he is a trickshot artist doesn’t totally do his talents justice. This artist is an entertainer, with plenty of golf knowledge. Just let him hit a golf ball off your jockstrap while you are lying down if you want to get an idea what kind of talent he has. Oozing with personality, he has developed a Golf With Attitude motto for his teachings.

“My teaching philosophy is to not only fix a golf game, it’s to educate so the golfer can self diagnose … so they have a good understanding of what their weaknesses are. You make the individuals smarter about their game. And everybody can take something away from it. A low handicap can benefit as well as a beginner.

“You could do a golf school with lessons all morning and you play all afternoon,” says DeMarchi. “Although that sounds like a good idea, it’s murder.”

“You really beat your brains in if you swing a club for eight hours,” says Keirstead. “You need a vacation after that.”

In the end, it’s all about the golfers on the other end of the lessons … the ones who are shelling out money to have their golf swings analyzed and hopefully put up better numbers on the scorecard.

“When somebody walks up and says, ‘Wow, you made that fun and you also made it make sense … that’s a pretty big compliment,” says Keirstead.

“Claudio is one of my best examples of a golf student that has benefited from a school several years ago when I took him from a 15 handicap down to the 6 -8 handicap range in just 3 months.  He has never looked back.  The best part for him is that when something is a little off with the game, he learned the fundamentals and is able to self correct.  The not so good part for me financially is that since that time he has only had one lesson. How good is that!”

The Orange County National courses are a treat.

Crooked Cat has significant elevation changes, rolling fairways and large, contoured greens, a player’s best friend. There aren’t a lot of trees and it has a distinct links-style look. Really, Grip It and Rip It isn’t a bad philosophy here. The thing is, even seemingly good shots can wind up in a wee spot of trouble – as it would on any good links course.

Panther Lake has native pines with the course rollicking around and over wetlands and lakes. There is plenty of natural beauty and since there are no homes, there’s also plenty of wildlife. The 10th hole became sort of famous when Tiger Woods, from 150 yards out, appeared in a TV commercial when he was told by his talking headcover, Frank, to “get more forgiving irons, the Nike Pro Combos.”

Orange County National has received plenty of accolades along the way – including Top 10 Best Places You Can Play, a Readers Choice Award and Top 50 Public Courses. The PGA Tour Q School has held its finals there four times and will be there again in 2013. And politeness from anybody that works there is another big plus.

The forces behind the March 22-26 golf experience know a bit about what they are doing. Besides Keirstead, DeMarchi has many, many years in the golf business, representing destinations, marketing and writing and Kilgore runs the successful Waggle Travel, which is in the business of keeping golfers happy and sending them off on vacations where the price is right.
