Green Gables Golf ClubGreen Gables Golf Club will be celebrating its highly anticipated Grand Reopening in the spring of 2009. Originally designed by world-renowned architect Stanley Thompson, Green Gables opened for play in 1939. In 2008, one of Canada's top architects, Thomas McBroom, restored the course to its rightful place back on top of Prince Edward Islands "Must Play Golf Courses". The restoration features bent grass tees, greens and fairways as well as multiple tee decks allowing golfers to select playing from 5200 to 7000 yards. The Globe and Mail has ranked Green Gables as a long standing member of Canada's Top 100 Golf Courses - the rebirth of this"Island Gem" will surely have it reclaim its rightful standing amongst Canada's elite courses. McBroom, has redefined the Green Gables golfing experience with new challenges and viewscapes all the while respecting the character and history of the Stanley Thompson original 1939 masterpiece.”

Truly a Masterpiece of two Masterminds. Green Gables is a top 100 course with Globe & Mail and Score Golf, with a 4 Star rating from Golf Digest.

The Gahan House
The Gahan House 01 The Gahan House 02 The Gahan House Drink Menu The Gahan House Food Menu

The Gahan HouseGahan is not a common surname in Charlottetown today, but in the middle of the 19th century, John Gahan was a prominent merchant, an importer of teas, wines, and family groceries. His place of business was on the corner of Queen and Sydney Streets; the former McIsaac building.

Mr. Gahan lived next door to the shop, at 126 Sydney Street, in a wooden house he had purchased from the Brennan Estate. In 1880, he replaced that residence with the mansardroofed brick residence still at this address. It remained in Gahan’s ownership until the beginning of the 20th century when John Gahan’s widow, Marguerita, sold the property to Edward Kelly, the enterprising Irishman who built and owned houses all over Charlottetown.

After Edward Kelly’s death in 1922, the premises became the property of the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation. The Sistersof the Precious Blood built a large addition to the house and used it as a convent until the 1960’s. In the last quarter century, the Gahan House had been used as a boarding house.
The Gahan Brewery (formerly Murphy’s Brewing Co.) was established in March 1997 next to the Lone Star Café at 449 University Avenue. Due to the increased popularity of the beer, they relocated to its current location at 126 Sydney Street. This move doubled its production capacity and gave it a permanent Old Charlottetown home in the Gahan House. Murphy’s Brewing Co. was renamed The Gahan Brewery in November 2000, and remains the only brewery on Prince Edward Island.

TESTIMONIALS

“We are still on Cloud 9 from our fantastic week in PEI! We had such a good time, and are already making plans to include the Couples Golf Festival in our vacation plans for next year. We want to thank both of you, and all of your wonderful staff for all you have done to make our experience so memorable. We were so excited and looking forward to the event, and you really exceeded our expectations on all accounts. You and your staff really went out of their way to greet everyone and make sure they were really looked after throughout each day.

The courses we played were fabulous, and we were delighted by all the extra surprises you had planned for us along the way. Each day was special. The whole event was really well organized and everything ran like clockwork. Not always easy to do when you have 180+ people to keep track of! The quality of food we enjoyed at the welcome reception and closing dinner were fabulous, and again exceeded our expectations.

We love PEI, having been there 13 years ago, and remembered the hospitality, beautiful scenery, and wonderfully relaxing atmosphere. The courses and scenery were spectacular, but it’s the people that make it special.

We stayed at the Delta Prince Edward, and would do so again. It was great on all accounts. Normally we like to vacation on our own, but we really enjoyed the couples atmosphere and met a number of nice people who also like to golf and travel!

Thank you so very much for all of your efforts to make the Couples Golf Festival such an enjoyable experience for all of us. It really was one of our best vacations ever!

We look forward to returning next year.

All the best,
Carol & Mike”

“Linda and I really enjoyed the Inaugural Couples Golf Festival. We are hoping we can return next year for the second annual event.

The Great George was a super choice. We had a great room and the staff was excellent. We would recommend staying there to anyone. In fact, we had good food and met some really fun islanders at the restaurants we visited and at all of the shops. I think the Maritimes are the friendliest places I have visited. We had similar experiences in Nova Scotia.

Thanks again for a great time and for the discount coupons to help with next year. If we can make it, we plan to stay a few extra days and see the rest of the wonderful island.

- Mark and Linda
